Shilo Recreation Ground in Awsworth is a space which is well used by local residents. However the main route into the recreation ground was poor, uneven and narrow. The path did not provide easy access for people in wheelchairs or people with pushchairs and did not provide easy access, especially in wet conditions.
The project involved widening and re-surfacing the existing footpath, creating a more accessible route into the site. Awsworth Villa’s football club who play on the pitch next to the footpath have an avid following of fans, and there was a demand from them to improve the seating on the site (the existing timber benches were poor and rotten). New benches were installed along the path, allowing fans to have a more comfortable and accessible place to watch the match.
The heritage of the site has also been recorded as part of this project, with the installation of a new interpretation board at the entrance, informing people of the history of the site, with details about the coal mining and previous railway line that ran alongside the football pitch.
The completed project has created a much more usable and accessible open space for the people of Awsworth. A further phase of work is planned for this site, to improve the play facilities in the pocket park area of the recreation ground and to create more informal areas of play for local children.
