Chard Street Park was a pocket park in Basford which had fallen into disrepair and was in a poor condition. As a result it was closed for 18 months to prevent vandalism and anti-social behaviour; this prevented the local residents from making use of the park.
The local community were consulted about how they would like to see the space improved. Continuous engagement with local residents helped to shape the design of the scheme. As a result a new, improved and more usable play area was created, which engendered a real sense of community pride and ownership.
A natural playscape was created which included mounding, boulders, logs and trees; these have helped to encourage imaginative and exciting play.
The project created a diverse and safe play area which is now utilised by the local community; it has provided a valuable local resource for families and residents.
